When Ibn Khaldun stated (in the Muqaddimah) that bands of desert raiders swept in out of the desert, conquered cities and invented civilisation, he was seeing the city crudely and simply as a machine-Ã -habiter, not as a complex world built on generation upon generation of social adjustment, of learning to live with other people in relative peace in a built environment.
The problems we have with that particular immigrant community is precisely because they have no mechanisms for social existence. Islam took that away from them. All they have is the primitive structure of family, clan and tribe that existed in pre-Islamic Arabia, which has been preserved and perpetuated wherever Islam had spread.
