For most of the 10s, scepticism about migration was staved off by the argument that it was fiscally necessary, bolstered by the taboo around racism. Suffice to say the fiscal case is looking rather flimsy these days, and unfortunately the mismanagement of migration has taken some toll on the taboo too.
